March 1, 2010 Public workshops announced for March 3 and 9 to explain the Draft Recovery Plan for Tidal Marshes of San Francisco and Suisun Bays. February 10, 2010 An article in the Marin IJ titled Feds want marsh recovery effort around Marin's shores and rest of the bay by Mark Prado describes th eU.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's announcement of a massive 50-year, $1.5 billion tidal marsh recovery effort that will include wetlands along Marin's shores. This effort may well include the wetlands along Pt. San Pedro Road and is being further researched by the committee. The overview document by the Service is titled Draft Recovery Plan for Tidal Marsh Ecosystems of Northern and Central California.
February 4, 2010 If you are concerned about activities affecting wetlands in your area, you need to be familiar with the Section 404 regulatory program of the Clean Water Act. This River Network website explains the different kinds of 404 permits that are required for different types of activities and how you can influence whether a proposed activity is permitted or not.
September 29, 2009 Committee Chair, Rodney Ruskin, took some wonderful photos of the return in force of snowy egrets, mallards and other avian wildlife to the Beach Road wetlands. While this resurgence of birds cannot all be attributed to the replaced flap gate, it surely played a part.
January 22, 2009 In a meeting with Ken Nordoff, San Rafael City Manager, the status of the inlet between the Loch Lomond Marina property and a portion of Bayview Acres subdivision (known as "Chicken Point") was discussed. This inlet has been silting in partially as a result of the failure of the breakwater built to protect the marina. This has also impacted the flow of water into the wetlands within Chicken Point (also know as the Beach Drive wetlands). This inlet is partially within the City of San Rafael and unincorporated Marin County. The breakwater is owned by the property owners of the marina, so there are multiple jurisdictions involved. The question was raised as to the responsibilities of each of these jurisdictions for the repair of the breakwater and the removal (dredging) of the silt buildup. Mr. Nordoff stated that the City has some grant money for dredging but not sufficient for all the City's dredging needs. It was agreed to further investigate this situation followed by a meeting between the Wetlands Committee, the City, and the County.
