Disaster Prep: Emergency Notification Systems

The City of San Rafael and County of Marin maintain a city-wide and county-wide emergency notification system.

The San Rafael Police Department has made changes in the way they send press releases, newsletters, and emergency alert notifications. If you are subscribed to their press release or newsletter notifications via Nixle, you do not need to do anything. Your email address has been imported to the new system.  The notifications will now come from “CityofSanRafael@public.govdelivery.com”.

The Marin County Sheriff’s Department has implemented an improved countywide emergency alert system called AlertMarin. If you live, work or go to school in Marin County and are 18 and over, you may now register your cell phone or VoIP (voice over internet protocol) phone to receive emergency alerts sent by call, text, email, or smartphone application from the County of Marin. Listed and unlisted/blocked Marin County landline phone numbers are already included in this emergency notification system. Cell phone and VoIP numbers are not included and will require your registration in the County’s Self-Registration Portal.

For City alerts, sign up for Nixle at https://local.nixle.com/register. To register for County-wide alerts on AlertMarin, go to www.alertmarin.org. You will no longer receive emergency alerts to your email address or cell/VOIP phone without signing up for one or both of these services.

Other resources can be found on the Marin County Sheriff’s Office of Emergency Services and the City of San Rafael’s Office of Emergency Services websites.
