Below is my letter to the editor of the Marin IJ highlighting our work for a safer Point San Pedro Road and Knight Drive crosswalk. It was published in the Sunday, July 14, edition,
As we continue to work on this serious issue with our community partners, we’d love to keep you informed. If you’d like to be notified about future Roadway Committee meetings, just email me at Roadway@sprcoalition.org.

Coalition aims to make Pt. San Pedro Road safer
I am writing as board chair for the Roadway Committee of the Point San Pedro Road Coalition. This East San Rafael nonprofit organization has endeavored for many years to work with the city, Marin County and the local community to address car accidents, near misses, speeding cars and the anxiety of walking, biking and driving along Point San Pedro Road.
Our complex corridor has many competing uses and safety issues. Our board was thrilled to see the grassroots effort organized by Octavia Monelli for safer travel on the roadway lauded in the June 22 letter to the editor with the headline “‘Walk and Roll’ event a push for safer San Pedro.”
One issue has general consensus: Knight Drive could use a safer crosswalk for pedestrians crossing busy Point San Pedro, where vehicles tend to speed. That intersection is the main point of ingress and egress for the Glenwood community, Glenwood Elementary School and Redeemer Preschool. It has a blind spot for cars turning onto Point San Pedro. Installing a pedestrian-activated crosswalk light would make it safer for all, including schoolchildren and their parents — it could also help calm traffic.
The safety of our roadway for everyone — pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists — has always been a top priority of our coalition. We are excited to see growing interest and public expression about this topic in our community. We are looking forward to continuing partnerships with the city and county.
Coalition members are optimistic that we can see positive change implemented for the safety of our community.
