The City’s Department of Public Works (DPW) has provided the Point San Pedro Road Coalition with the following update of the construction work associated with SMART’s extension from Downtown San Rafael to Larkspur.
PLEASE BE AWARE OF THE DATES IN WHICH PORTIONS OF SECOND AND THIRD STREETS IN FRONT OF THE SAN RAFAEL TRANSIT CENTER WILL BE CLOSED AND PLAN ACCORDLINGLY.
The DPW Update:
SMART has been working for almost a year to extend their service to Larkspur. They have:
- made significant improvements at the Andersen Drive crossing,
- completed the work needed to flip Francisco Blvd West and the train tracks to provide a safer pathway through San Rafael including a completely reconfigured Rice Drive intersection, and
- constructed the first phase of the multi-use path which will open sometime this summer.
- It is anticipated that the reconfigured Rice Drive intersection will open on Wednesday of this week.
SMART is now preparing to do the important construction work that crosses Second and Third Streets. Their work is scheduled to completely close Second Street initially and then Third Street over two consecutive weekends to get their work done as quickly as they can. These will both be full weekend closures.
SMART anticipates closing Second Street beginning at 8 pm Friday, May 31 until late Sunday night, June 2 to construct the rail crossing at Second Street. When Second is closed, traffic will be routed to 4th and then on Hetherton Street.
They will then move to Third Street over the weekend of June 7, again beginning on Friday at 8 pm and working continuously until their work is done late Sunday June 9th or early Monday morning June 10. When Third is closed, traffic will be routed north to Fourth, Fifth and Mission streets.
DPW has been working closely with SMART to ensure the construction goes smoothly and the streets re-open as soon as possible but this will be very disruptive to San Rafael residents and downtown businesses over these two weekends. SMART is preparing an outreach plan to make these closures public. DPW plans to keep residents and others updated, as will the Coalition, on the project as information becomes available.
