I wanted to provide area residents with an update on the maintenance of the Point San Pedro Road medians.
Maintenance of the medians is paid from Point San Pedro Road Median Assessment District funds with a competitively bid contract with Gardeners Guild that is overseen by the City of San Rafael’s Public Works Department.
Gardeners Guild provides landscape maintenance and liter removal services twice a week from March thru October and one a week from November thru February. On March 23, 2020, the City informed Gardeners Guild that the City and County following State mandated health restrictions related to the Coronavirus that landscaping and esthetics related work were not concerned essential services and that they should suspend their work on the medians. That restriction was in effect until early May at which time the restriction was removed and Gardeners Guild was permitted to resume their median maintenance work. Gardeners Guild was not paid during the time their work was suspended.
Also, during the restricted work period, City Public Works staff performed minor maintenance to the medians to ensure traffic lines of sight were not blocked and the irrigation system has properly functioning. Since early May, Gardeners Guild has been working to restore the landscaping on the medians to the condition they were in prior to the suspension of work. I anticipate that that restoration work will be completed by the middle of this month. Gardeners Guild will then continue with its regular maintenance activity.
The Point San Pedro Road Coalition’s Roadway Committee has been working with the City’s Public Works Department to help ensure the median maintenance work continues to be performed in an acceptable manner. We are also working with City Staff on issues associated with irrigation system repair as well as median water usage to control median maintenance costs.
I will keep you updated on this topic as we proceed into the future.
