Marin County is proposing to re-stripe Pt. San Pedro Road eastbound from Loch Lomond Drive/Lochinvar to Main Drive. This re-striping would reduce the number of lanes in this section from two to one. The recovered eastbound lane would be used to provide curb-side parking and a dedicated bike lane with a buffer between that lane and vehicular traffic. The webinar also includes a report from the City of San Rafael staff on Knight Drive, Peacock Drive, and Riveria Drive crosswalks. Re-Striping Proposal Background & Contacts
In 2020, the County responded to the need to upgrade Bayside Park to address disabled access issues resulting from tripping hazards from tree roots and other liabilities identified by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). With ADA funding, the County filed for a permit from Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC). BCDC has jurisdiction for this area as it is within 100 feet of the Bay. BCDC researched its original permit for the site issued in the early 1970’s as a component of the widening of Pt. San Pedro Road from two lanes to four. BCDC discovered that the dedicated bike lane, required as part of that original permit, had never been installed. As a condition for approving the new permit, BDCD required the County to install a dedicated bike lane in front of the park in spite of entreaties by the County and the Coalition to remove that original requirement. Under existing conditions, this could only be done by removing the parking in front of the park.
Concerns continued to be voiced by the Coalition, residents, and park users about the loss of parking. As a result of these concerns, the County developed a proposal to maintain vehicular parking in front of the park and still provide the BCDC-required dedicated bike lane. This proposal would reduce the vehicular lanes from two to one in the eastbound direction of Pt. San Pedro Road.
This webinar was created by the Coalition to allow the County to publicly explain its proposal and for residents to express their opinions and ask questions. The Coalition, as part of the webinar, also provided the City an opportunity to share updates on the three Roadway pedestrian crosswalks located east of the Park.
The Coalition has not taken a position (for, against or neutral) on this proposal at this time and is looking for community input, as is the County.
