Wetlands Committee Presentation of
The Migratory Shorebird Project:
Connecting Communities of the Americas through
Research and Conservation
When: Wednesday, May 14 @ 6:30 p.m.
Where: Free virtual presentation – register below
Matt Reiter (see bio below), Research Director of the Pacific Coast and Central Valley Group at Point Blue Conservation Science, will speak about the Migratory Shorebird Project and the Pacific Flyway along which birds migrate through the San Francisco Bay. An eye-opening presentation about the thousands of birds that pass overhead on their annual migration.

Shorebirds are some of the most migratory species on the planet and unfortunately recent data suggest their populations have been declining dramatically. Effective conservation for these birds requires working at scales that are relevant given their wide-ranging ecology
The Migratory Shorebird Project (MSP; www.migratoryshorebirdproject.org) is a 13-country research, monitoring, and conservation network that is focused on reversing the declines of shorebird populations and their habitats along the Pacific Coast of the Americas.
This presentation is part of our ongoing series of educational events about our precious local wetlands. Click here to view our previously recorded webinars about birdlife in our wetlands that are posted on the Coalition’s YouTube Channel.
Speaker

Matthew E. Reiter, PhD
As a Research Director and quantitative ecologist with Point Blue Conservation Science, Dr. Matt Reiter’s work is focused on the ecology and conservation of migratory waterbirds and their wetland habitats and particularly using innovative approaches to understand the impacts of threats such as habitat loss and climate change across broad migratory landscapes. Matt leads a diverse set of projects from studying beneficial agriculture practices for birds and finding optimal multiple benefit water management solutions, to using satellites to track the distribution of water in the Central Valley, to developing and implementing a coordinated research, monitoring, and conservation network for migratory shorebirds from Canada to Chile to identify conservation priorities for these populations both now and in the future.
Matt has a Ph.D. in Wildlife Ecology from the University of Minnesota studying Canada Goose breeding ecology in the Canadian Arctic. Prior to graduate school he worked with USGS in Hawaii studying avian malaria impacts on native birds and has been at Point Blue since 2009.
Donations to the Migratory Shorebird Project are greatly appreciated.
