The State of California laws mandating accessory (second) dwelling units (ADUs) changed as of January 2017. San Rafael must comply with the new law mandating ADUs since its revised language now voids the city’s previous ordinance.
The S.R. Community Development Department (CDD) is moving forward with drafting a new local ordinance, which will be completed later this summer. The CDD will be providing the City Council with a presentation on the new State law. The presentation will include the implications of this new law for San Rafael.
This presentation will be listed as a “Discussion” item on the June 19, 2017 City Council meeting starting at 7:00 pm. The staff report covering the State law changes, implications for San Rafael and suggested approaches will be posted with the meeting agenda on Thursday, June 15 (see S.R. website at http://www.cityofsanrafael.org/public-meetings/).
