Planning activity is starting up on reclamation work to begin this spring. The same is true for installation of air quality monitoring equipment.
Reclamation Plan: The Phase 1 Reclamation Plan (NE Quadrant) grading permit application and supporting plans and reports were received by the Marin County Department of Public Works (DPW) on December 29, 2014. The documents were reviewed by DPW and comments were returned to the Engineer. Another submittal is expected sometime in March 2015. Reclamation will begin in the Northeast quadrant of the quarry. As a result, neighbors in close proximity to the quarry, especially Marin Bay Park, are likely to be affected by the first phase of reclamation. Noise and dust are the biggest concerns.
Air Quality Monitoring: Sonoma Technology, Inc. (STI) has commenced the initial task of securing sites to install air monitoring equipment. The County is coordinating the location selection with MMWD and the City of San Rafael. The project is on schedule to begin base line monitoring in April.
Greenhouse Gas & Water Quality Reports: In 2010, when the Quarry was given its new permit, the County required the Quarry to submit several studies within one year of the issuance of the permit. The County later granted several extensions of time, upon the Quarry’s request, for the completion of studies. The Greenhouse Gas Study, was finally submitted in 2014. A report on the Water Quality in the Quarry bowl, dated 12/30/14, was recently posted on the DPW website. All reports related to Quarry operations may be found on the County’s Quarry-related website page.
Other: The Quarry submitted their annual report for mining operations and other activities on January 30, 2015. The report is currently under review by the County for compliance with the Quarry Permit conditions of approval. At the Coalition’s first official meeting with our new Marin County supervisor for District 1, Damon Connolly, a general discussion included several issues related to the Quarry, especially reclamation and the future of that site when Quarry operations eventually cease.
