The San Rafael City Council unanimously approved new speed limit reductions across the city, including a section of Point San Pedro Road between Marina Blvd and Porto Bello Drive, which will be reduced from 40 to 35 mph. This action was made possible through changes in state law under AB 43, which allows San Rafael the ability to lower speed limits on roads with documented safety concerns. The Coalition supported this effort, and spoke at the City Council meeting encouraging the City to continue evaluating additional speed limit reductions along the remainder of Pt San Pedro Road.
The Coalition has long advocated for uniform speed limits along the corridor to help create a roadway that is easier to understand, safer for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists, and more consistent with the City’s Vision Zero commitment to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries.
We appreciate the City Council, staff, and traffic engineering team for their continued partnership and willingness to prioritize roadway safety. We also thank everyone in our community who has attended meetings, submitted comments, and advocated for safer streets over the years. We will continue to update our community on this issue as the City Council considers future speed limit changes along the corridor.
