During the past several weeks, the Point San Pedro Road Coalition’s Roadway Committee has received a number of complaints from East San Rafael residents regarding the maintenance of the medians along Point San Pedro Road. The complaints included the proliferation of weeds both on the medians in the hardscape adjacent to the medians, the lack of removal of some of the dead plant materials on the medians and failure to remove of liter on the medians in a timely manner.
Last week, the Roadway Committee sent a communication to the City’s Public Works Department expressing our concern the medians were not being maintained in the manner in which residents were promised as part of the Median Assessment Agreement. Under this agreement, the City contracts out the maintenance of the medians to a private landscape maintenance firm. That contract clearly defines the maintenance work plan for the medians.
This morning Jim Dickson, the Chairman of our Median Maintenance Subcommittee and I met with Dave Davenport, City Parks Superintendent , who has responsibility of managing the median maintenance contract, and the contractor’s new manager of the median project. We reviewed our concerns and our expectations for the maintenance of the medians. We also conducted a vehicle tour of the medians.
I am happy to report that as a result of our follow-up, the contractor has assigned additional staff to address our immediate maintenance concerns of the medians and City staff and the Contractor had committed to us that they will in the future oversee and maintain the medians in a manner which is required under the maintenance contact. The Roadway Committee will continue to be vigilant in making sure this is done.
