On February 10, we posted information provided from the City of San Rafael regarding the planned closure of a westbound lane of Pt. San Pedro between Peacock Dr. and Knight Dr. to accommodate construction work associated with the renovation of Fire Station # 55. However, when the City closed the lane, the San Rafael’s Department of Public Works (DPW) plan changed so that the closure extended east of Peacock Dr. in order to eliminate multiple transitions from two lanes to one lane. When the changed plan was implemented without advance notice to the Coalition and our community, the expanded lane closure came as a surprise to residents and prompted questions and concerns.
We immediately reached out to Bill Guerin, DPW Director. In response, he provided the announcement below regarding the need to extend the closure of the westbound lane of traffic and the relocation of the bicycle lane between Rivera Drive and two-thirds of the block between Peacock Drive and Knight Drive.
In addition, when DPW closed the lane, they installed plastic delineators (stanchions) to divide the closed and bicycle lane from the traffic lane. The Coalition received inquires from area residents regarding these delineators. The City has indicated the delineators can be removed, and rely only on the pavement markings once area residents become used to the lane reduction and it is safe to do so.
To help illustrate the situation, CLICK HERE to see a video of an overhead view of the lane closure prepared by Mike Wolpert, a Peacock Gap resident, which clearly shows the new lane configuration. Thanks to Mike for providing this to us!
The Coalition will continue to monitor the situation and keep you updated.
