If you drive, bike, or walk along Point San Pedro Road, please be aware of the pavement preservation work by the City of San Rafael and the County of Marin. Please slow down, follow directions from flaggers and posted signs, and allow a little extra travel time when using the corridor.
Completed Work
- From August 17-21, crews removed the striping and prepared the road surface, starting at San Rafael High School and continuing eastward to Biscayne Drive.
- From August 22-28 the road was treated with a slurry seal, which is a thin protective layer of asphalt and crushed rock to extend roadway life, improve surface quality, and reduce long‑term repair needs.
- From August 29 to September 11, crews pre-marked the road (called “cat tracking) with work occurring at night from 8:00 PM – 5:00 AM.
Upcoming Work
From September 14th through mid-October, crews will stripe the roads & install new signs. Although this work was originally planned to occur at night, the crews discovered that there was too much moisture on the roads for the paint to adhere properly. Consequently, the work has been rescheduled to daytime hours from 8am-5pm.
- Aug 14-18: Painting “long lines” (continuous and dashed lines that run parallel to the flow of traffic). There will be traffic controls similar to what we saw during the slurry seal. There will always be 1 lane open in each direction between the high school and Riviera Drive. Between Riviera Drive and Biscayne Drive, flaggers will control traffic to flow only one direction at a time. Expect delays on that section of the road. No parking 8am to 5pm as posted.
- Aug 21-25, Aug 28-Oct 2: Painting transverse markings (such as crosswalks, stop bars, and yield triangles) and legends (arrows, text, and bike symbols). There will still be some traffic controls, but less overall impact than the long lines. Check posted signs for parking restrictions.
- Oct 5 to mid-Oct: Install signs on posts. Note that some of the parking is being removed to accommodate the bike lane, as mentioned in previous posts. Check posted signs for parking restrictions.
The lanes will be narrowed from 12 feet to 11 feet and enhanced bicycle markings will be added along with a buffer between bike lane and traffic lanes where possible. No parking will be allowed on Pt. San Pedro Road from Marina Blvd to just west of Beech Dr, except for a section in front of San Pedro Elementary School.

From August 22-28 the road was treated with a slurry seal, which is a thin protective layer of asphalt and crushed rock to extend roadway life, improve surface quality, and reduce long‑term repair needs. Work was completed in sections as follows:
Note when parking: For the first few weeks, try to avoid sharp/dry turns when parking. Only turn wheels while moving forward. “Power Steering Marks” are light swirls or streaks that appear on a freshly seal-coated asphalt surface when tires twist or pivot without moving forward. They are cosmetic, common, temporary, and usually fade in a few weeks.
- Sat, Aug 22: Outer (i.e., right, curbside) lanes from San Rafael High School to Beach Drive.
- Traffic will be reduced to 1 lane in each direction.
- NO STREET PARKING on PSPR from 7am to 6pm.
- Driveways entering directly onto PSPR will be blocked. Tip for Residents: If you plan to use your car over the weekend or Monday, park it on a nearby side street outside the work zone before 7:00 AM on Saturday. Driveway access will reopen as soon as the slurry cures (typically 4-5 hours).
- Two crews will be working in parallel to complete the slurry work as quickly as possible. It’s possible that the crews will make it further east than Beach Drive.
- A portion of the westbound lanes near Marina Blvd will be skipped for now because of the work to repair the retaining wall. This section will be addressed at a later date.
- Sun, Aug 23: Inner (i.e., left, median-side) lanes from San Rafael High School to Beach Drive.
- Traffic will be reduced to 1 lane in each direction.
- NO STREET PARKING on PSPR from 7am to 6pm. Driveways will have full access.
- Two crews will be working in parallel to complete the slurry work as quickly as possible.
- Mon, Aug 24: Outer lanes (i.e., right, curbside) from Beach Drive to Peacock Drive.
- Traffic will be reduced to 1 lane in each direction.
- NO STREET PARKING on PSPR from 7am to 6pm.
- Driveways entering directly onto PSPR will be blocked. Tip for Residents: If you plan to use your car over the weekend or Monday, park it on a nearby side street outside the work zone before 7:00 AM on Saturday. Driveway access will reopen as soon as the slurry cures (typically 4-5 hours).
- Tue, Aug 25: Eastbound lane from Peacock Drive to Biscayne Drive

- Traffic will be reduced to 1 lane, on which flaggers will control 2-way traffic. Expect delays.
- NO STREET PARKING on PSPR from 8am to 5pm.
- Wed, Aug 26: Westbound lane from Peacock Drive to Biscayne Drive
- Outer (i.e., right, curbside) lane from Peacock Drive to Riviera Drive;
- Single lane from Riviera Drive to Biscayne Drive;
- Traffic will be reduced to 1 lane, on which flaggers will control 2-way traffic. Expect delays.
- NO STREET PARKING on PSPR from 8am to 5pm.
- Thu, Aug 27: Inner (i.e., left, median-side) lanes from Beach Drive to Riviera Drive in both directions
- Traffic will be reduced to 1 lane in each direction.
- NO STREET PARKING on PSPR from 8am to 5pm.
- Fri, Aug 28: Complete small patches of roadway missed because they were left open for traffic on previous days.
- No major lane closures but there will be some areas with traffic control.
- NO STREET PARKING on PSPR from 8am to 5pm.
What to Expect
• Work hours: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM
• Lane closures, flaggers, and one‑way traffic controls
• Temporary bike lane tapers or closures
• “No Parking – Tow Away” signs posted 48–72 hours before work zones
Important Requirements on Slurry Seal Days
When slurry seal is applied on your block:
• Driveways in the active work area will be temporarily inaccessible
• Detours will be in place; expect delays and consider alternate routes
• No vehicles or trailers may be driven or parked on the roadway—they will be towed if they block work
• If you need your vehicle, please park on a nearby street not scheduled for slurry seal
Preventing Damage to Fresh Pavement
• Do not water lawns or landscaping on construction days—runoff can stain or damage the new surface
• Turn off automatic sprinklers to avoid overspray
• Driving on uncured slurry can track oil onto sidewalks, driveways, and carpets
Garbage Collection
Streets scheduled for slurry seal on pickup day will receive early collection.
• Place bins out by 6:00 AM
Access for Residents
• Driveways and side streets will remain accessible except for short interruptions; 72‑hour notice will be provided
• Pedestrian access will be maintained with flagger support when needed
Deliveries & Service Vehicles
Expect possible delays for Amazon, UPS, FedEx, USPS, and grocery services. Consider updating delivery instructions on the week your area is scheduled for slurry sealing.
Emergency Access
Emergency vehicles will have full access at all times.
After Slurry Seal
• Striping and roadway markings will be reinstalled once the surface cures
• Traffic control may remain in place during this phase
• If work on your block is delayed, you will receive updated notifications

This Advanced Construction Notice was delivered to homes and businesses on Pt. San Pedro Road. It contains important information, including a warning that vehicles will be towed and requests to avoid street parking, turn off lawn sprinklers to prevent runoff, and use alternate routes.
